March 2006 Program
Integration: Using all the tools

Dale Erquiaga
At our Friday, March 3, breakfast meeting from 7:30 to 9 a.m., Dale Erquiaga, vice president and managing director for R&R Partners, an integrated marketing communications firm, will draw from his experiences on a successful national campaign to help us understand the use of effective advertising and marketing combined with public relations strategies. Read more about Dale here.

After the breakfast meeting, Erquiaga will speak on "Integration: Using all the tools" at SPRC's annual workshop from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the Foley Center on the Gonzaga campus. The workshop is free to SPRC members; nonmembers may also attend for a fee of $10.

The Jive

By Janelle Jovick, SPRC president

SPRC continues to provide members with programs that enhance skill sets, offer updates on new communication trends, and remind busy practitioners how to maintain best communication practices in a continually changing environment. A key component of these best practices includes auditing our organizations to see if they are achieving goals set forth in their mission.

The SPRC Board of Directors has been performing an audit on our organization over the last six months. Nicole Grier, vice president and marketing director of Wheatland Bank, has been leading us through a strategic planning initiative.  In fact, for those who have yet to log on to the Web site, this is actually Nicole’s sole responsibility on the board this year. We began in July, with the board taking a strategic pre-planning survey to assess current perceptions and satisfaction with SPRC. I am excited to tell you the results of the survey were very positive and also offered some constructive criticism on areas SPRC needs to develop. One of the areas identified for development was the establishment of a strategic vision for the organization. You can read a summary of the board survey results here.

After gathering information from board members we wanted to hear back from our membership. We sent out a survey in October and reported results to members in December. See the member survey results here. These statistics, in conjunction with the board survey, were pivotal components of the SWOT analysis.

One of the most critical statistics in this process was the realization that 56 percent of our membership classifies their job as communications or marketing. We kept this in mind in January when the board had another strategic planning session, and drafted a new vision and mission statement for SPRC. While still in draft form, we wanted to give membership a peek at all of the hard work and gather some feedback. As you can see, the movement toward a more integrated approach is nearing, not only in the SPRC vision and mission, but also in our name.

SPRC board members will be available to discuss ideas on Friday, March 3, at the monthly meeting, and also from 9:00-9:30 a.m. before the workshop.  Additional conversations on this topic can be e-mailed to jjovick@hollister-stier.com.

Current Mission:

SPRC is a nonprofit organization with the mission of fostering the professional development of its members and students, while advancing the value and image of the public relations profession in the Inland Northwest.

New Draft of SPRC Vision Statement:

Be the leading organization of business communication professionals that provides members continuing education, enhances credibility of members through the use of integrated marketing communication in their profession, and demonstrates the impact of integrated marketing communication in our community and economy.

New Draft of SPRC Mission Statement:

SPRC is Spokane’s leading communication organization dedicated to advancing the integrated marketing communication profession through: professional development, community impact, and commitment to credibility.

Professional Development – SPRC offers members a variety of opportunities to expand their integrated marketing communication knowledge, strengthen relationships with other professionals, and share ideas.

·        Monthly breakfast meetings feature guest speakers who present relevant and timely communications topics.

·        Networking events are held throughout the year.

·        A monthly e-newsletter keeps members informed.

·        SPARC Awards recognize the work of integrated marketing communication professionals.

·        An annual workshop helps members learn new skills.

Community Impact – SPRC members are professionals who are passionate about their work and excited to be part of the Spokane community.  Often operating in highly visible positions, as spokespeople for our companies, we recognize it is important to share our skill sets with other business sectors and students to ensure the future of our profession.

·        Internship Program – Each year, SPRC raises funds to provide two to three paid internships for junior or senior level college students studying public relations, communications, or marketing.  Students are matched with host companies through a competitive application process and agree to work 30 hours a week for a 10 week period.  The experience provides students with invaluable work experience with companies related to their specific career interests.  The program offers members a pre-screened, financially supported intern.

Commitment to Credibility –

SPRC serves as a community resource for integrated marketing communication professionals to enhance their credibility and their profession simultaneously.  SPRC’s professional development and recognition programs, combined with the involvement of its members in the community, heighten the awareness of the organization and the vital role integrated marketing communication professionals provide to area businesses and organizations.

One Last Thought

I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living. It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope and that enables you to laugh at all of life's realities.
